Seminar Details

Topic: "Free access to law" and "Open Data" - Similarities and Differences
Speaker: Daniel Poulin is a professor and holds the Legal Information Research Chair at the Faculty of Law of the University of Montreal.
Duration: The seminar lasts for an hour, including 20 minutes for discussion.

Abstract

This presentation will compare "Free access to law" with "Open Data" approaches, bringing out their similarities and differences. It will consider the development of the Free Access to Law Movement (FALM) over the last decade since the adoption of the Montreal Declaration on Free Access to Law, and the extent to which various of the FALM members embody these differing approaches.

Biographical Note

Daniel Poulin is a professor and holds the Legal Information Research Chair at the Faculty of Law of the University of Montreal. He pioneered the use of Internet for the law in Canada when he started publishing Supreme Court of Canada decisions in 1993. For over ten years, Daniel was director of the LexUM lab at the University of Montreal. He founded the Canadian Citation Committee where he led the design of the Canadian Neutral Citation system, now implemented in Canadian courts. He led the design and implementation of the Canadian Legal Information Institute (CanLII) (operated for the Federation of Law Societies of Canada), from 2000 to 2010. He has been a member of the Canadian Judicial Council's Judges Technology Advisory Committee since 1994. The LexUM lab founded by Daniel Poulin in the 1990s became a private company in 2010, and he is now president of Lexum Inc.
