INTRODUCTION - SEASON'S GREETINGS

It has been some time since the last 'News from AustLII', but here is a wrap-up for 2002.

Also, in this issue, we have attached the newly launched 'WorldLII News' which provides information about updates to databases from all Legal Information Institutes as well as new additions to the WorldLII Catalog.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the numerous organisations and individuals that have supported AustLII during 2002 by providing data, funding, advice and other assistance.

We would also like to thank all of our users for their continuing support and feedback.

Season's Greetings from all of us at AustLII.

LEGAL PUBLISHERS ON AUSTLII

AustLII has recently entered into an arrangement with CCH whereby users of the AustLII website can gain limited access to materials on the CCH website through AustLII's new 'Legal Publishers' search facility. CCH has provided generous sponsorship of AustLII in return.

Initially, the information on the CCH website which is searchable through the new AustLII facility is limited to CCH's print and online catalogue information. This is in keeping with AustLII's desire to assist its users to find the widest range of research materials, including both free access and commercially published materials.

There are three ways to use this new facility to search for documents on legal publishers' websites. Firstly, you can select "Search Australian Legal Publishers" from the list on the left hand side of the AustLII home page <http://www.austlii.edu.au/>. Secondly, you can select "Legal Publishers" from the right hand drop down list at the top of the AustLII home page. Thirdly, a user can click on the "Repeat search over: .... Legal Publishers" link at the top any page that lists the results of a search.

The 'Legal Publishers' search facility is a non-exclusive facility, and CCH is its first user.

AustLII thanks CCH for becoming one of its valued sponsors.

AUSTLII COMPLETES MAJOR UPGRADE

AustLII has completed an upgrade that has increased its storage capacity tenfold. In August it went live with a new system that has a terabyte (1000 gigabytes) of raw storage.

The new system, funded by a $122,000 grant from the Australian Research Council, can be upgraded to 2.4 terabytes (raw), which provides a good growth path for AustLII's storage requirements for the next few years.

AUSTLII FOUNDERS ARE FINALISTS IN WORLD TECHNOLOGY AWARD

AustLII's Professor Graham Greenleaf, Associate Professor Andrew Mowbray and Mr Chung were jointly nominated finalists for innovation in the field of law at the World Technology Awards.

Finalists in the awards, given by the World Technology Network, were decided by a six month selection and voting process canvassing the opinions of international authorities in 20 technology related fields.

4TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON LAW VIA INTERNET

The 4th International Conference on Law via the Internet was held in Montreal on 2-4 October 2002. The conference was hosted by LexUM, a research team at the Public Law Research Centre of the University of Montreal, and CanLII (Canadian Legal Information Institute). The previous conferences were organised by AustLII (Australasian Legal Information Institute) in Sydney, Australia in 1997, 1999 and 2001.

The program covered areas such as intellectual property in judicial documents, online publications and privacy and issues related to new technologies including technical standards in the production of judgments, their designation and citation, freedom of technological choices, e-filing and evidence through digital documents. Special sessions for judges and adjudicators covered the use of the Internet by judges, new audiences and plain language and integrated justice systems. Sessions were also held on strategies and projects relating to access to legal information in developing countries and the distribution of useful and reliable resources. The final session was devoted to the achievements of and challenges facing Legal Information Institutes including AustLII, BAILII, CanLII, LII (Cornell), PacLII, HKLII and WorldLII.

The conference proceedings can be viewed online at <http://www.lexum.umontreal.ca/conf2002/en/>.
