We would like to take this opportunity to thank the numerous organisations and individuals that have supported AustLII during 2000 by providing data, funding, advice and other assistance. We would also like to thank all of our users for their continuing support of AustLII shown in the most direct way: AustLII's usage continues to rise and is now over 300,000 'hits' per day. Season's Greetings from all of us at AustLII. ------------------------------------------- EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES AT AUSTLII http://www.austlii.edu.au/austlii/employment/20001110.html AustLII needs new staff members to take up positions funded by new grants, and to continue the work of staff members who are moving on to new opportunities. The rest of this 'News from AustLII' gives some of the reasons why AustLII is an exciting and rewarding place to work. We invite anyone who has the necessary technical skills, interest in the area of computerisation of law, to contact us to discuss the positions we have available. A commitment to free access to essential legal information helps but is not essential! There are three positions being advertised at AustLII (URL above), and we may fill as many as five positions if suitable applicants are available. Further information on the areas of responsibility and the qualifications required by prospective candidates can be found in the employment advertisement. Applications close 17 January 2001. In addition, AustLII is about to advertise a new senior position of 'External Relations Manager', which will be a challenging position combining aspects of the work of a business manager (including fund-raising), a customer relations manager, a principal contact for our data sources, and a conference manager. Interested applicants should use the same contact details as in the above advertisement to obtain more information. Applications will close mid-February 2001. *** We request readers of 'News from AustLII' to make the availability of these positions known to anyone who may be interested. *** ------------------------------------------- AIJA 'TECHNOLOGY FOR JUSTICE' AWARD http://www.aija.org.au/tech2/winners.htm At the recent Australian Institute of Judicial Administration (AIJA) Legal Website Competition, AustLII was awarded the AIJA's highest award, for 'Best Overall Legal Website'. AustLII thanks all of Australia's courts and tribunals for their continuing support and cooperation. ------------------------------------------- MAJOR NEW FUNDING FOR AUSTLII ----------------------------- During the past few months, AustLII has succeeded in obtaining major new sources of funding, and commitments to continuation of funding, which provide us with a reasonable funding base for 2001 and 2002. We wish to thank the following organisations for their generous funding of AustLII: - Australian Research Council, Research Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (RIEF) Fund - $185,000 for 2001, plus contributions from our parent Universities (UNSW $50,000 and UTS $35,000). Cash and in-kind contributions from Australian Business Limited, IP Australia, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Sun Microsystems Australia also assisted our obtaining this grant. - Department of Defence (Military Law Centre) - $125,000 for 2001 - Australian Business Limited - $80,000 per year for 3 years from July 2000. Australian Business Limited operates WorkplaceInfo - a website that integrates its value-added materials with primary materials on AustLII. The address for WorkplaceInfo is http://www.workplaceinfo.com.au/.
