Point-in-Time Legislation System

April 2005

AustLII launched its Point-in-Time (PiT) Legislation System on April 7, 2005.

The PiT system allows an AustLII user to see an Act or section as it was for any date covered by the system. Users can inspect all versions of a section, and can visually compare sections at different dates side-by-side. AustLII's PiT system already covers most NSW legislation, and part of the legislation of South Australia and Queensland. These databases are still under development.

AustLII aims to apply a generic approach to developing point-in-time legislation which will be applied progressively to legislation from all Australian jurisdictions subject to funding and resource availability.

Our PiT research was supported by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant and also involved the support of the following industry partners: New South Wales Parliamentary Counsel's Office, Australian Business Limited and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The PiT legislation system project is available for user testing and feedback at http://portsea.austlii.edu.au/pit/.

For full details, see the background paper AustLII's Point-in-Time legislation system: A generic PiT system for presenting legislation.
