Reviews

The Queensland (‘Qld’) Government has announced that it will review the Aboriginal Land Act 1991 (Qld) and the Torres Strait Islander Land Act 1991 (Qld) and bring the two Acts into alignment with State Indigenous policy and the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth). Currently the Act uses two mechanisms for Indigenous people to secure title to land – land transfers and land claims. In addition to amendments to the Commonwealth’s Native Title Act 1993 and the Queensland Government’s Meeting Challenges and Making Choices policy for improving quality of life in Indigenous communities have changed the context in which the two land Acts operate. The review will be conducted with the intention of recommending legislative change and as such Indigenous people and their communities and other stakeholders are encouraged to take part in the review. An issues paper is available from the Department of Natural Resource and Mines’ website <www.nrm.qld.gov.au/nativetitle/land/ilar.html> or by phoning Native Title and Indigenous Land Services on 07 3896 3354. Written submissions must be sent to <kevin.murphy@nrm.qld.gov.au> by 30 November 2004.
