CHAIRPERSON WELCOMES ATSIC'S GESTURE OF RECONCILIATION WITH MINISTER

Chairperson, Evelyn Scott, has welcomed ATSIC's recent decision to lift its motion of no confidence in the Minster for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Senator John Herron.

"ATSIC's Board and the Chairman, Gatjil Djerrkura, have shown great courage in lifting their previous decision and making this gesture of reconciliation with the Minister and the Government," Ms. Scott said today.

"I am encouraged by ATSIC's new approach and I hope that it will lead to a sound working relationship between the Minister and this country's peak Indigenous organisation.

"This relationship is important because we all want to achieve better outcomes for Indigenous Australians.

"The reconciliation process requires dialogue, effort and effective working relationships between all of us," Ms. Scott said.

Ms. Scott is unavailable for interview.
