Achieving reconciliation is a challenge for all of us. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider community - individuals, organisations and governments - all have a part in building our future together. Through partnerships, we must give priority to four vital measures.

Education: If reconciliation is to be achieved, it will be based on an honest and deep understanding of the truth of our shared history and respect for each other. This will require new approaches to, and additional activities in, education across formal schooling, the training of professionals, and community awareness programs.

Government accountability: Governments provide most essential services. Yet serious disadvantage remains. All service providers must be held accountable through the setting of measurable targets and the public reporting of performance.

Legislation: A process is needed to deal with unfinished business, including a legislative framework to allow for negotiated outcomes on matters such as rights, self-determination, traditional law, and constitutional reform.

Leadership on reconciliation: Reconciliation Australia, a representative national body funded and supported by all sectors of our community, will help keep the reconciliation process going.

The above measures will be supported by the Roadmap for Reconciliation and its four national strategies:

A National Strategy to Sustain the Reconciliation Process that builds on the progress towards reconciliation after the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation completes its term.

A National Strategy to Promote Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Rights that aims to ensure recognition, respect and understanding in the wider community of the status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first peoples of Australia.

A National Strategy to Overcome Disadvantage that aims for a society where Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders enjoy the same standard of living as other Australians.

A National Strategy for Economic Independence that aims for a society where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities can share the same levels of economic independence as the wider community.
