Local Reconciliation Groups

Get involved with your local reconciliation groups to help to understand and promote and reconciliation! Local Reconciliation Groups (LRGs) are an important part of the People's Movement and are essential to sustaining reconciliation. LRGs exist in many forms in the States and Territories, and come together for various reasons such as to:

  • discuss and understand reconciliation

  • organise activities

  • explore ways to commit to reconciliation within their communities

  • learn more about Indigenous cultures and issues that affect Indigenous people in Australia

  • work and develop relationships with local Indigenous people and representative groups

  • promote an understanding of reconciliation within the local community

  • assist with the distribution of Council resources

  • identify leaders to train and establish new groups

  • form relationships with other existing groups

LRGs also play a central role in organising activities and events for National Reconciliation Week. LRGs can be contacted through your local AFR Coordinator. Council's new Learning Circle Kits are an extremely useful resource for LRGs.

Community commitment is the backbone of the People's Movement for Reconciliation. An important goal for Council in its third and final term is to support and maintain community effort for reconciliation. By doing this, we will ensure that the process of reconciliation continues beyond the life of the Council.

Council seeks the support of new and existing LRGs in helping to achieve its vision:

A united Australia which respects this land of ours; values the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage; and provides justice and equity for all.
