RECONCILIATION IN AUSTRALIA

 The Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation, the national body responsible for Australia’s reconciliation process, will hold a media conference at the:

Sydney Media Centre on Friday 22 September 2000 at 2.00pm.

In attendance will be the following members of the Council’s Executive Committee:

  • Council Chair – Dr Evelyn Scott, prominent Indigenous rights campaigner

  • Council Deputy Chair – Professor Gustav Nossal, Australian of the Year 2000

  • Mr Ian Spicer, OA, former Chief Executive of Australia’s peak Industry body, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI)

  • Ms Jackie Huggins, Aboriginal author, historian and activist

  • Ms Marjorie Thorpe, Aboriginal health worker and activist

  • Senator Aden Ridgeway, the second Aboriginal person elected to Federal Parliament

Council Executive member and Australian media personality, Mr Ray Martin will chair the media conference.

The Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation was established under the Council for Aboriginal Act 1991 with the unanimous support of Federal Parliament. Under the Act the Council’s term expires on 1 January 2001. The Council recently staged the Corroboree 2000 event which included a Walk for Reconciliation across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. More than 250,000 Australians took part in this historic event.

Council members will explain to the media:

  • Why the reconciliation process was established

  • What Australians have achieved in the ten years of the formal reconciliation process; and

  • Council’s vision for the future of reconciliation in Australia
