Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation

Corroboree 2000

Theme: 'Sharing Our Future'

Council will be holding its final major public event in Sydney on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 May 2000. These events will be the culmination of nine years work of the Council. The Council will launch its proposals for a national document of reconciliation at this event, following extensive consultations (refer to Documents of Reconciliation for further information) with Indigenous Australians and the wider community.

The event will aim to successfully bring together the many threads of reconciliation and launch a "declaration of reconciliation" or similar document which the Council hopes the vast majority of Australians and their representative bodies and voluntary organisations will support.

Council believes that a successful event and a national commitment of this kind will help establish a positive climate as the eyes of the world turn towards Australia for the Sydney 2000 Olympics in September.

The significance of the date of this event is that it will be:

  • The 33rd anniversary of the 1967 Referendum which gave the Commonwealth Government the power to make laws for Aboriginal people;

  • The third anniversary of the Australian Reconciliation Convention; and

  • The start of the fifth annual National Reconciliation Week.

As more information becomes available on these events, this page will be updated.
