YOUNG OFFENDERS ACT 1994 - SECT 19
19 . Detention of young persons apprehended by police
(1) The Commissioner
of Police is to make rules, orders, or regulations under section 9 of the
Police Act 1892 in respect of the apprehension of young persons for offences
and their detention in custody and a member of the Police Force is to have
regard to any such rules, orders, or regulations.
(2) A young person in
custody who is under 18 years old and who is not released on bail, whether or
not bail has been refused under the Bail Act 1982 , is, subject to subsection
(3) and section 49, to be taken to and placed in a detention centre as soon as
practicable after the person’s apprehension.
(3) A young person who
is under 18 years old may be held in the custody of the police until
arrangements can be made for the person to be taken to and placed in a
detention centre in accordance with subsection (2).
