Students of the Hawthorn Institute

7. Students of the Hawthorn Institute



(1) A person who, immediately before the appointed day, was enrolled as a
student of the Hawthorn Institute becomes a student of the Hawthorn Company.



(2) A person who, immediately before the appointed day, was entitled to enrol
as a student of the Hawthorn Institute is entitled to apply for enrolment as a
student of the Hawthorn Company in a course of study that is the same or
substantially the same as that in which he or she was entitled to enrol at the
Hawthorn Institute.

(3) Despite anything to the contrary in the Melbourne University Act 1958-

(a) statutes or regulations made under that Act by the Council of Melbourne
may authorise the Council, at the request of a person who was a student of the
Hawthorn Institute before 31 December 1990 and who enrolled in an award course
before the appointed day, to confer on the student on or before 31 December
1992, subject to and in accordance with the statutes and regulations, a
degree, diploma, certificate or other award under a name that includes the
title of the award and the words "Hawthorn Institute of Education"; and

   (b)  a person who holds a degree, diploma or certificate of the Hawthorn
        Institute or the Hawthorn Company is entitled to the same benefits and
        privileges at Melbourne as are enjoyed by persons holding degrees,
        diplomas or certificates of Melbourne, as if the degree, diploma or
        certificate of the Hawthorn Institute were a degree, diploma or
        certificate of Melbourne.

(4) If a person was, before the appointed day, entitled to a degree, diploma,
certificate or other award of the Hawthorn Institute as a result of a course
that, after 1 January 1991, became an award course that had not been conferred
or granted, the degree, diploma, certificate or award must be granted by the
Council of Melbourne and, for that purpose, the Council of Melbourne may until
31 December 1992 exercise in the name of the Hawthorn Institute any power that
the Council of the Hawthorn Institute might have exercised before the
appointed day in respect of that degree, diploma, certificate or award.
