The long title for the Bill for this Act was "A Bill to provide for the merger of the Hawthorn Institute of Education with Hawthorn Institute of Education Limited and for the affiliation of the Institute with the University of Melbourne and for other purposes.".
The Melbourne University (Hawthorn) Act 1991 was assented to on 19 November 1991 and came into operation as follows:
Part 1 on 19 November 1991: section 2(1); rest of Act on 1 January 1992: Special Gazette (No. 70) 23 December 1991 page 1.
