561362B.I-16/9/2009 iv BILL LA INTRODUCTION 16/9/2009
PARLIAMENT OF VICTORIA
Introduced in the Assembly
La Trobe University Bill 2009
A Bill for an Act to re-enact with amendments the law relating to
La Trobe University, to repeal the La Trobe University Act 1964 and
other Acts and for other purposes.
Preamble
La Trobe University was created as Victoria's third
University by the La Trobe University Act 1964.
It came into being with the enrolment of
500 students in 1967.
La Trobe's founding mission was, and remains, to
serve the community of Victoria for the purposes
of higher education, for the education, economic,
social and cultural benefit of Victorians and for
wider Australian and international communities.
From inception, La Trobe has been particularly
focussed on providing access to quality higher
education to those from disadvantaged
backgrounds and has become an internationally
recognised leader in this field.
Innovation in teaching and research was, and
remains, central to its mission.

La Trobe University Bill 2009
s. 1
From its beginnings as a single campus,
metropolitan University in Bundoora, La Trobe has
expanded its presence across Victoria, through a
merger with the Wodonga Institute of Tertiary
Education in 1991 and through the establishment
in 1991 of the La Trobe University College of
Northern Victoria, incorporating the Bendigo
College of Advanced Education. La Trobe
University has campuses in Albury-Wodonga,
Bendigo, Mildura, Shepparton and Beechworth.
La Trobe attracts students from across the world
for the quality of its teaching and learning.
The University has achieved international standing
for its research and scholarship in a wide variety of
disciplines in the humanities and social sciences,
health sciences and technology.
Through this re-enactment of its foundation
legislation, La Trobe University reaffirms its
commitment to the pursuit of excellence and
innovation, providing for the needs of the
Victorian, Australian and international
communities.
The Parliament of Victoria therefore enacts:
