When an animal is used for scientific purposes

48 When an animal is used for scientific purposes

(1) An animal is used for
"scientific purposes" if it is used in an activity performed to acquire, demonstrate or develop knowledge or a technique in any field of science.
Examples of an activity—
• diagnosis
• environmental studies
• field trials
• producing biological products
• product testing
• research, including for example, creating or breeding a new line of animal
• teaching
(2) However, despite subsection (1) , banding a bird or tagging a fish is not use of the bird or fish for scientific purposes.
(3) The use of an animal for scientific purposes also includes using any of the remains of an animal that was killed for the purpose of carrying out an activity mentioned in subsection (1) .
