EXPLANATORY STATEMENT


GENERAL OUTLINE

This amends the Poisons and Dangerous Drugs Act. The purpose of this Bill is to allow for optometrists who have completed an accredited course of education to supply scheduled medications for the treatment of eye disorders and eye diseases.


NOTES ON CLAUSES

Clause 1. Short Title

This is a formal clause that provides for the citation of the Bill. The Bill when passed may be cited as the Poisons and Dangerous Drugs Amendment Act 2006.

Clause 2. Commencement

This is a formal clause that allows for the commencement of the Act.

Clause 3. Act amended

This is a formal clause that confirms that the Act to be amended is the Poisons and Dangerous Drugs Act.


Clause 4. Amendment of section 6 (Interpretation)

This clause seeks to clarify that to be recognised as an optometrist, a person must be registered as an optometrist under the Northern Territory Health Practitioners Act.

Clause 5. Amendment of section 29 (Supply of substances for therapeutic use)

This clause seeks to advise that the Optometrists Board will impose conditions and restrictions so that only appropriately educated and registered optometrists will be allowed to sell or supply a scheduled substance for the treatment of an eye condition.
