The Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory enacts
as follows:
Short title
This Act may be cited as the No New Taxes Act
2006.
Freezing
of taxes and charges
(1) No new tax or charge (however described) may be imposed
by a law of the Territory during the financial year ending on 30 June
2007.
(2) The amount of any tax or charge (however described)
imposed by a law of the Territory must not be increased during the financial
year ending on
30 June 2007.
(3) Subsection (2):
(a) does not prevent the reduction during that financial
year of a tax or charge; and
(b) has effect despite any contrary provision in a law of
the Territory (for example, a provision for the automatic adjustment of a tax or
charge).
(4) This section does not apply to a tax or charge imposed
for or by a municipal council or community government council constituted under
the Local Government Act.
