FISHERIES MANAGEMENT ACT 1994 - SECT 30
General considerations for TAC Committee
30 General considerations for TAC Committee
(1) In determining total allowable catches under this Division, the
TAC Committee is to give effect to the objects of this Act and is to have
regard to all relevant scientific, industry, community, social and economic
factors.
(2) The TAC Committee is also to have regard to: (a) the need to
ensure that the exploitation of fisheries resources is conducted in a manner
that will conserve fish stocks in the long term, and
(b) the impact of
fishing activities on all species of fish and the aquatic environment, and
(c) the precautionary principle, namely, that if there are threats of serious
or irreversible damage to fish stocks, lack of full scientific certainty
should not be used as a reason for postponing measures to prevent that damage.
