ANIMAL RESEARCH ACT 1985 - SECT 47
Unlawfully carrying out animal research
(1) An individual shall not carry out animal research unless the individual is
the holder of an animal research authority. : Maximum penalty--20 penalty
units or imprisonment for 12 months, or both.
(2) The holder of an
animal research authority shall not carry out animal research-- (a) otherwise
than as authorised by the authority, or
(b) otherwise than with the approval,
and in accordance with the directions, of the animal care and ethics committee
specified in the authority.
: Maximum penalty--30 penalty units or
imprisonment for 12 months, or both.
(3) Without limiting subsection (2), a
person must not carry out either of the following-- (a) a forced swim test,
(b) a forced smoke inhalation experiment.

or imprisonment for 12 months, or both.
