Constitution Amendment Bill 1997

Explanatory note

This explanatory note relates to this Bill as introduced into Parliament.*

Overview of Bill

The object of this Bill is to amend the Constitution Act 1902 so as:

(a) to reduce the number of Members of the Legislative Assembly from 99
to 93, and
(b) to increase the maximum number of Ministers from 20 to 21.

Explanatory note

Outline of provisions

Clause 1 sets out the name (also called the short title) of the proposed Act.

Clause 2 provides for the proposed Act to commence on the date of assent.

Clause 3 is a formal provision that gives effect to the Schedule of
amendments.

Clause 4 contains transitional provisions that will enable a redistribution of
electoral districts to be undertaken before the next general election and
ensure that the reduction in the number of Members of the Legislative
Assembly takes effect at that general election.

Schedule 1 [1] amends section 25 of the Constitution Act 1902 for the
purpose mentioned above in paragraph (a) of the Overview.

Schedule 1 [2] amends section 35F of the Constitution Act 1902 for the
purpose mentioned above in paragraph (b) of the Overview.
