ABORIGINAL LAND RIGHTS (AMENDMENT) BILL 1991

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This Explanatory Note relates to this Bill

as introduced into Parliament)

The object of this Bill is to amend the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 to permit the
candidates elected after the election of members of the New South Wales Aboriginal
Land Council held on 16 November 1991 to constitute the Council, transact business
and elect temporary officers pending finalisation of the election results.

Clause 1 specifies the short title of the proposed Act.

Clause 2 provides for its commencement on the date of assent.

Clause 3 amends the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 to insert a new clause into
Schedule 4. The clause applies only to the election mentioned above. It enables the new
Council to meet and transact business even though councillors for all areas have not
been declare
d elected. The Council is authorised to elect an acting Chairperson,
Secretary and Treasurer to hold office until the election is
