MEAT RESEARCH CORPORATION REGULATIONS (AMENDMENT) 1993 NO. 6

EXPLANATORY STATEMENT

STATUTORY RULES 1993 No. 6

Issued by the Authority of the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy

Meat Research Corporation Act 1985

Meat Research Corporation Regulations (Amendment)

The proposed Meat Research Corporation (MRC) Regulations will include in the statement of functions of the MRC, the facilitation of the dissemination, adoption and commercialisation of research and development results. The Primary Industries and Energy Research and Development Act 1989 (the PIERD Act) contains this function under paragraph 11(c). Inclusion of this function in the Act will give the MRC the same range of functions available to other primary industry and energy portfolio research and development bodies, most of which are established under the PIERD Act.

Extension of this function to the MRC will formalise the MRC's continuing responsibility for the commercial development of Fututech, a computer controlled automated slaughter chain which has effectively extended the MRC's role beyond its legislated charter.

The function is necessary to provide the MRC with some security with respect to accounting for its role in the commercialisation of Fututech.
