LIVE-STOCK SLAUGHTER LEVY REGULATIONS (AMENDMENT) 1993 NO. 13
EXPLANATORY STATEMENTSTATUTORY RULES 1993 No. 13
Issued by the Authority of the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy
Live-Stock Slaughter Levy Act 1964
Live-stock Slaughter Levy Regulations (Amendment)
The Live-stock Slaughter Levy Act 1964 (the Act) imposes a levy on the slaughter of sheep, lambs, buffalos and goats. The levy consists of four components, which raise funds for the following purposes:
(a) financing of the Australian Meat and Live-stock Corporation (AMLC);
(b) financing of the Meat Research Corporation (MRC);
(c) financing of bovine disease eradication (buffaloes only); and
(d) financing the Exotic Animal Disease Preparedness Consultative Council (EXANDIS).
These regulations will implement a reduction in the rate of the levy for bovine disease eradication on buffaloes. As a result of the success of the Brucellosis and Tuberculosis Eradication Campaign, which has made the transition from an active to a monitoring phase, and the level of reserves in the National Cattle Disease Eradication Trust Account, the Cattle Council of Australia has recommended a decrease in the rate of the disease eradication component for buffaloes. The Minister for Primary Industries and Energy has accepted this recommendation. This reduction will have effect from 1 March 1993.
The present and proposed operative rates of levy on buffaloes and the prescribed maximum rates are as follows:
Buffalo AMLC MRC Subtotal Disease eradication EXANDIS Total
|
Present
rates (per head) $3.10 $2.00 $5.10 $1.20 $0.03 $6.33

Proposed

|
Prescribed maximum rates $2.00 $18.00 $5.00
|
The rates of levy on sheep, lambs and goats remain unchanged by these regulations.
