SOCIAL SECURITY ACT 1991 No. 46, 1991 - SECT 1229

1229. (1) If:

   (a)  a person owes a debt to the Commonwealth under section 1224, 1225 or
        1227; and

   (b)  the debt arose on or after 1 September 1987; and

   (c)  the amount of the debt is more than $50; and

   (d)  the debt is not fully paid within 3 months after the person has been
        given a notice for the purposes of this subsection advising the person
        of the amount of the debt; the debt is increased by adding to it a
        penalty amount, worked out under subsection (2).

(2) The penalty amount:

   (a)  is worked out by adding together $15 and 10% of the amount of debt
        unpaid at the end of that period of 3 months; and

   (b)  is not to exceed $515.
