An Act to amend the States Grants (Urban Public Transport) Act 1978.

  BE IT ENACTED by the Queen, and the Senate and House of Representatives of
the Commonwealth of Australia, as follows:
Short title, &c.
  1. (1) This Act may be cited as the States Grants (Urban Public Transport)
Amendment Act 1979.*1*
  (2) The States Grants (Urban Public Transport) Act 1978*2* is in this Act
referred to as the Principal Act.

Commencement

  2. This Act shall come into operation on the day on which it receives the
Royal Assent.*1*

  3. Section 8 of the Principal Act is repealed and the following section
substituted:
Additional amount to be allocated among States
  ''8. (1) For the purpose of increasing the maximum grant for each of the
States in respect of a year specified in column 1 of the table in this
sub-section, there is available for allocation among the States, as the
Minister determines, in respect of that year, the amount specified in column 2
of that table that is applicable in respect of that year.

  ''(2) In making an allocation under sub-section (1), the Minister shall have
regard to the needs of public transport in urban areas in the States in the
year concerned.

  ''(3) An allocation under sub-section (1) shall be made by the Minister by
notice in the Gazette specifying the year to which the allocation relates and
the amount allocated to each of the States.''.

  4. The Schedule to the Principal Act is amended by omitting the columns
headed ''Year commencing 1 July 1980'', ''Year commencing 1 July 1981'' and
