NORTHERN TERRITORY (SELF-GOVERNMENT) ACT 1978 No. 58, 1978 - SECT 59
Legislative Assembly, &c. to continue
59. (1) Notwithstanding the repeal of the previous Act, but subject to this
Act, until the day of the first general election of members of the Legislative
Assembly after the commencing date-
(a) the existing Legislative Assembly continues in existence and shall,
for the purposes of this Act, be deemed to be the Legislative Assembly
referred to in section 13;
(b) the members of the existing Legislative Assembly holding office
immediately before the commencing date continue to hold office; and
(c) the Speaker holding office immediately before the commencing date
continues to hold office.
(2) Notwithstanding sub-section 17 (2) of this Act and the repeal of the
previous Act, until the day of the first general election of members of the
Legislative Assembly after the commencing date, sub-sections 4G (2) and (3) of
the previous Act shall be deemed to continue in force in relation to the
existing Legislative Assembly.
(3) Notwithstanding the repeal of the previous Act, the standing rules and
orders of the existing Legislative Assembly in force immediately before the
commencing date continue in force, but may be altered or repealed in
accordance with this Act.
(4) Until provision is made by enactment for the purposes of sub-section 13
(2), the Legislative Assembly consists of 19 members.
(5) Sub-section 13 (6) does not apply for the purposes of the continuance in
office of a member of the existing Legislative Assembly by virtue of
sub-section (1) of this section.
