AUSTRALIAN SECURITIES COMMISSION ACT 1989 No. 90 of 1989 - SECT 14

Minister may direct investigations
14. (1) Where, in the Minister's opinion, it is in the public interest for a
particular matter to which subsection (2) applies to be investigated, he or
she may by writing direct the Commission to investigate that matter.

(2) This subsection applies to a matter relating to:

   (a)  an alleged or suspected contravention of a national scheme law;

   (b)  an alleged or suspected contravention of a law of the Commonwealth or
        of a Territory, being a contravention that:

        (i)    concerns the management or affairs of a body corporate; or

        (ii)   involves fraud or dishonesty and relates to a body corporate,
               securities or futures contracts;

   (c)  the affairs, or particular affairs, of a corporation;

   (d)  dealing in eligible securities;

   (e)  dealing in securities or futures contracts:

        (i)    by, or on behalf of, a corporation;

        (ii)   in eligible circumstances; or

        (iii)  on a stock market or futures market, as the case may be,
               conducted by a corporation or in eligible circumstances;

   (f)  the establishment or conducting of a stock market or futures market:

        (i)    by a corporation; or

        (ii)   in eligible circumstances;

   (g)  the provision of clearing house facilities for a futures market:

        (i)    by a corporation; or

        (ii)   in eligible circumstances;

   (h)  the provision of clearing house facilities for a futures market
        conducted:

        (i)    by a corporation; or

        (ii)   in eligible circumstances;

   (j)  the giving of advice, analyses or reports about eligible securities;
        or

   (k)  the giving, by or to a corporation, of advice, analyses, or reports
        about securities or futures contracts.

(3) The Commission shall comply with a direction under subsection (1).

(4) A direction under subsection (1) does not prevent the Commission from
delegating a function or power.
