NAVIGATION (CONSTRUCTION) REGULATIONS 1968 - REG 129

Methods of fire protection

(1)
In addition to the express provisions of this Part, a ship designed to carry more than thirty-six passengers shall be so constructed and fitted that the accommodation spaces and service spaces in the ship are protected against fire in accordance with one of the following methods:

(a)
a method that provides for the construction, in accordance with Method I set out in the Fourth Schedule, of internal divisional bulkheads of B class divisions of incombustible materials and the fitting of an automatic fire alarm and fire detection system, of a kind referred to in that Method, in the accommodation spaces and service spaces;

(b)
a method that provides for the fitting, in accordance with Method II set out in the Fourth Schedule, of an automatic fire alarm, fire detection and sprinkler system for the detection and extinction of fire in all spaces in which a fire might be expected to originate, without restriction, except where expressly provided to the contrary in this Part or in the Fourth Schedule, on the type of internal divisional bulkheads in those spaces;

(c)
a method that provides for the construction, in accordance with Method III set out in the Fourth Schedule, of subdivision bulkheads within each main vertical zone and the fitting of an automatic fire alarm and fire detection system, of a kind referred to in that Method, in all spaces in which a fire might be expected to originate; or

(d)
a method that is a combination of any two or more, or of parts of any two or more, of the methods specified in the last three preceding paragraphs and is approved.

(2)
In addition to the express provisions of this Part, a ship designed to carry not more than thirty-six passengers:

(a)
shall be so constructed that all enclosure bulkheads in accommodation spaces conform with the requirements specified in Method I set out in the Fourth Schedule; or

(b)
shall be fitted with an automatic fire alarm and fire detection system of a kind referred to in Method III set out in the Fourth Schedule and shall be so constructed that all corridor bulkheads in accommodation spaces shall be of steel or of B class divisions.
