     The Parliament of Australia enacts:
26


     1 Short title
27

                    This Act may be cited as the Social Security (Helping Pensioners
28
                    Hit by the Skills Shortage) Act 2006.

     2 Commencement
30

                    This Act commences on the day on which it receives the Royal
31
                    Assent.

                 Each Act that is specified in a Schedule to this Act is amended or
2
                 repealed as set out in the applicable items in the Schedule
3
                 concerned, and any other item in a Schedule to this Act has effect
4
                 according to its terms.

     Schedule 1--Amendment of the Social
 2

           Security Act 1991
 3


     1 After subsection 1118(2A)
 4

           Insert:
 5

          (2B) If:
 6
                 (a) a person sells the person's principal home; and
 7
                 (b) the person is unable within 12 months to acquire another
 8
                     residence that is to be the person's principal home; and
 9
                 (c) in the Secretary's opinion the delay in acquiring another
10
                     residence that is to be the person's principal home is because
11
                     of circumstances beyond the person's control; and
12
                 (d) the person is likely, within 24 months, to apply the whole or
13
                     a part of the proceeds of the sale in acquiring another
14
                     residence that is to be the person's principal home;
15
               then so much of the proceeds of the sale as the person is likely to
16
               apply in acquiring the other residence is to be disregarded during
17
               that period for the purpose of this Act (other than Division 1B of
18
               Part 3.10).
