Introduction

This book, the first volume of the UTS Law Review, comprises the papers presented at the Courts and the Media Forum convened at UTS Law School in November 1998. It brings together contributions from senior members of the judiciary, government, scholars, reporters and practitioners engaged in the debate. I hope The Courts and the Media will prove to be a useful resource for everyone interested in the relationship between the "third branch" and the "Fourth Estate".

I would like to thank the busy judges, scholars, practitioners and reporters who participated as speakers, panel chairs and panel members: Richard Ackland, Professor David Anderson, Kimberley Ashbee, Professor Wendy Bacon, Chief Justice Michael Black, Jenny Brockie, Rod Campbell, Professor Michael Chesterman, Chief Justice John Doyle, Julie Eisenberg, Justice Tony Fitzgerald, Professor David Flint, Liz Jackson, Andrew Kenyon, Margo Kingston, Bernard Lane, Susannah Lobez, the Hon. Robert McLelland, Chris Merritt, Professor Chris Nash, Professor Denis Pearce, Alan Rose, Justice Bernard Teague, Professor Rod Tiffen, Professor Sally Walker, the Hon. Daryl Williams, and George Williams.

I would also like to thank: Francesca Wraith, Juilee Pryor, Yasmon and the students who assisted with the staging of the Forum and editorial tasks; Professor David Barker, Andrew Mowbray and George Marsh for their unstinting support for the event and for the Review; the Faculty of Law for the opportunity to be the Review's inaugural editor; Halstead Press for its efficiency and diligence in the preparation of the final product; and Gilbert and Tobin for their financial support of the Review.
