AIRAANZ Conference 2007This annual conference of industrial relations academic researchers brings to public notice a crop of work reflecting on changes at work, in labour regulation and industrial life in New Zealand and Australia, and beyond.
A real highlight was provided by a last minute schedule change which allowed a full presentation on recent developments in Tonga and links between industrial issues and the pro-democracy movement in that country. Professor Tom Kochan from MIT presented an excellent keynote address on changes in perspectives about industrial relations from a US vantage point, commenting on prospects for a new approach to labour law in the US in the event of a Democrat president. His analysis was optimistic about the potential for change.
For a fairly comprehensive overview of the state and findings of industrial relations research in Australia and New Zealand, the conference is an invaluable annual aid. I recommend it.
Review by Professor Barbara Pocock, Director of the Centre for Work and Life at the University of South Australia.
CEDA/Fujitsu Economic and Political Overview 2007An informed and valuable analysis of the emerging challenges in 2007, with economic commentary by Macquarie Bank’s Richard Gibbs, political overview by business columnist Terry McCrann, and international affairs analysis by Sam Lipski AM, Chief Executive, The Pratt Foundation. Lipski looked at Iran as a contentious force in Middle East affairs, but warned climate change and poverty could prove the real trans-national threat.
Keynote was from Victorian Premier Steve Bracks. He emphasised job and economic growth and maxmising population outcomes via a new national reform agenda to improve literacy and numeracy.
