2.3. Integrated legal document management

The effective integration of document control, transcript retrieval and
exhibit imaging is one of the principal challenges for their effective use in
complex litigation. An example of effective integration is given later in
relation to the 'Rothwells trial' in Western Australia. Staudt and Keane
(1992) 8:01 comment:

... the ultimate goal of litigation support systems is a single search
of all testimony and documents together. No one system on the market
in 1992 can accomplish this without significant structuring, coding
and systematic indexing. All of the leading packages have some tools
to achieve this end, but they still require significant training and
sophisticated, labour intensive effort. ... Each of [the current
'integrated' packages] offers the additional ability to view and print
the facsimile image of the associated document or exhibit ... The
complete integration of imaging with document summaries and full text
transcript software is still in its early stages.
