5.4. Image retrieval of exhibits and other documents
Image processing of documents in complex criminal matters is increasingly
common within Australian investigative agencies. The Australian Securities
Commission is the largest user of imaging for investigative purposes, due in
part to its extensive experience in imaging in the creation of the DocImage
database of documents concerning all companies registered in Australia. ASC
uses document imaging internally as part of the process of investigating
companies, in conjunction with its ISIS retrieval system. The National Crime
Authority is also introducing image processing into a number of complex fraud
investigations it is conducting (Livermore (1992)). In South Australia, imaging
has also been used by the defence in a recent complex trial, although not in
court, so it is not only prosecution agencies who are finding it advantageous.
